It’s no secret that I’ve been pretty down recently. I’ve been depressed, moody, low-energy, and just not much fun in general. So a little while ago I decided to try something. Every weekday morning, on the way to work, I take a picture and post it to Instagram (which autoshares to Facebook and Twitter) with a message of encouragement.
Like a lot of people, and a lot of creatives in particular, I tend to be very hard on myself. The idea behind the messages is to try and be kinder, and remind myself that I’m okay, even when I’m not okay. If the posts help other people, I’ll be thrilled, but it’s really just for me. I’m doing it “in public” because otherwise it’s just way too easy for me to drop off.
I haven’t been doing this experiment long enough to really know if it’s having any impact on me – and it’s especially hard to judge my mood at the moment because the day job has me running around like something that runs around really frantically – but I like to think that I am a little bit happier since I started with this.
I know that the autoshares from Instagram are really clumsy though, so I’m planning to get myself set up with some sort of scheduler that I can use to post the same content across platforms without dragging platform-specific formatting across as well. I don’t know when I’ll get to that, but hopefully it will be soon.
